It has never been my ambition to put my name forward in a legal challenge, especially a challenge against such a seemingly impregnable array of powerful political and economic forces. I have done so only as a last resort, and only because it is absolutely essential that the silent majority who oppose this road are given a final chance to have their concerns heard before the courts. While the political and commercial backers of this enterprise have seen fit to ignore public opinio…

The Campaign to Save Tara today announced details of a legal challenge to the proposed M3 Motorway through the Tara/Skryne Valley in Co. Meath. The Campaign claims that this case is being taken in the public interest and only after all other democratic avenues have been exhausted.
In a message of support read out at today’s launch, Seamus Heaney said, “It could be said that the Campaign to Save Tara is putting its case in ‘the name of dead generations’: for the past two…

In Our Disposable Society, What Value Do We Place On Our Ancestors?
There is a battle ensuing in Ireland, and it has been for several years
now. This is a battle not unlike that of 1793, or even more recently
the Easter Rising of 1916. Born of the Republic, this battle has at its
core the finest champions, whose love lies deep in the Heart Of
Ireland, the Tara Complex.
The Tara Complex has a rich, ancient, and honorable history. It is
where the seat of the High…

Dear Mr. Ahern,
With All Due Respect,
I have watched, since the Autumn of 2005, the continuing battle over
the M3 motorway in the Tara/Skryne (Gabhra) Valley. I first became
acquainted with the issue whilst my husband and I were on our way to
the Dublin Airport the last day of our visit. It was then that we saw
the “Archaeological” dig signs close by to the Hill of Tara, with “No
Trespassing” written all over them. Upon our return to the U.S., I did
a bit of investi…

The National Roads Authority has revealed how it is excavating the controversial new national monument at Lismullen on the route of the €850 million M3 motorway.
Senior archaeologist with the National Roads Authority (NRA), Mary Deevy, admitted that so little evidence remains that "forensic archaeology" will be used to try and reveal exactly what it was used for.
The monument consists of two circular enclosures made of arcs of stake-holes and what appears to be…

Council workers carrying out roadworks in Athenry, Co Galway, have made an important medieval discovery. The workers, who were preparing the ground for a new roundabout on the main Galway road, uncovered a portion of the town's main entrance gate.
It was excavated by archaeologist Ronan Jones, working on behalf of Galway County Council and Hickey Homes, who are building a housing development nearby.
The gate, in an area known locally as Swan's Gate, is believe…

I found a site called heywhatsthat.com
that is supposed to, (using googlemaps), give you a panoramic view of
the mountain peaks you can see from a particular point. It's also
supposed to show you the visible field you could see from that point
(the view shed). Now I thought this would be useful to map the
legendary view across Ireland from the top of the Hill of Tara, I'm not
sure it works properly, the site uses raw data from NASA and a…

GREEN Party Senator Dan Boyle has revealed he came "close to losing his mind" in the tough negotiations with Fianna Fail.
He also said that Transport Minister Noel Dempsey provided the biggest "angry moment" of the entire eight days of negotiations to form a new government.
In an article in the Green Party's newsletter published today, Mr Boyle said: "We argued. They stonewalled. We got the changes we could. Came close to losing my mind."
He was aske…

NRA gets go-ahead for M3 at LismullenEanna O Caollai
An Bord Pleanála has ruled the M3 motorway can proceed along its original route and that the National Roads Authority can start work on the excavation on the national monument at Lismullen before
constructing the road on top of it.
The semicircular enclosure, which lies across the northbound lane of the proposed motorway, is 80 metres in diameter and dates from between 380BC and 520BC. It is thoug

The Minister for Transport says he is in favour of the planned Drogheda-Naas
orbital route around Dublin and suggests that it could be a toll road if it goes
ahead.
The proposed motorway would begin south of Drogheda towards Navan, pass south
around Trim before ending near Naas in Co Kildare.
The road will not continue on to connect with the N11 Dublin to Wexford road
because of the Wicklow mountains.

Gormley 'can't make M3 go away'
Ronan McGreevy
Irish Times
Saturday, August 18, 2007
Minister for the Environment John Gormley has said he has "no magic
wand" to make the M3 motorway go away.
Mr Gormley met protesters against the proposed motorway who picketed
the offices of the Green Party on Suffolk Street in Dublin yesterday.
The meeting, which took place in a restaurant close to party
headquarters, was an impromptu affair which took…

When Dick Roche, in his twilight hours as Minister for the Environment
and Heritage, signed an order for the preservation by record of the
Lismullin henge, was there some devil lurking in the detail that only
came to light when Mr Gormley availed of expert legal advice?
It would remove a lot of pressure from Mr Gormley if he would, in these
times of openness and transparency, tell us who it is that tied his
hands regarding the M3 motorway project.
Mr Gorml…

PROTESTERS blocking the M3 motorway passing near the Hill of Tara have
now turned their attention to a similar campaign in the ancient
Biblical city of Damascus.
The Syrian government wants to build an eight-lane motorway through two
ancient districts of the Syrian capital to improve infrastructure.
Angry local residents face eviction orders and have been offered
compensation to relocate.

Up until May of this year, the fight to protect the ancient landscape of Tara
from the M3 motorway was seen by many as being a lost cause. The Irish
government ignored all pleas on Tara's behalf, including a joint-letter signed
internationally by 350 academics emphasizing what a unique cultural treasure the
Tara landscape is, not just for Ireland, but for the world. The plight of Tara
began to receive less and less press coverage. The stage looked set for the M3

Some interesting Tara questions
Wednesday August 01 2007
Rory Flood (Letters, July 30) claims that only one individual finds the
apathy of the Irish public to the situation at Tara unfavourable.
Perhaps Mr Flood is not aware, but during a recent poll on the subject
of the route of the proposed M3 motorway, over 67pc of the Irish public
disagreed with the route selected.
I, too, find the entire “controversy” over this road interes…

Town rejects EU position after long wait for bypass
Irish Times

POLAND: Waiting for a bypass is not just an Irish pastime. The 50,000
residents of the historic spa town of Augustow in northeastern Poland
have spent more than 15 years waiting for theirs.
More than 5,000 trucks and cars belch through the town's narrow streets
each day and residents hoped things would soon change, with work on the…

Dear Sir or Madam,
I continue to be alarmed by the activities of the Irish government as
regards the M-3 and other roadways being built in Ireland, and which
are causing irreparable damage to the honor and memory of our
ancestors.
This morning I was acquainted with the fact that seven
valued and highly respected protesters who were arrested last week at
the Hill of Tara were granted bail under the condition that they
refrain from protecting the h…
